The first double page starts with a conversation between a mother and her adult daughter. The mother is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and is developing a creeping fear of slowly losing control over her mind and life, because she is no longer able to understand the written information provided by her children that she needs to get through her daily routine.
To cite Dieter Herbst: "Text is optically encoded language." This means it is much easier to understand a message by hearing it, because language originally is an oral experience.
The vicious cycle for the Alzheimer's patient is that she forgets the information conveyed verbally immediately. Therefore, she depends more and more on the written word, which is getting harder for her to decode day by day.
I tried to make this process visible by working with the "Deformation of Text."
In the first conversation, only a few letters are missing. More and more letters are missing on the two following pages while the drawing is developing and becoming complete.
On the second double page, the confusion increases, depicting the inevitable transformation process taking place in the patient.
The last double page reflects the state of surrender and final liberation.
